Dr. Julia Lam, pianist and pedagogue, presently teaches in her studio in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Previously, she has been a faculty member at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Assistant Professor at Malone College in Ohio and Wingate College in North Carolina. In the summer, she has been on the faculty at the Indiana University Summer Piano Academy and the Northern Lights Music Festival in Aurora, Minnesota. Her extensive training includes a Ph.D. in piano, music theory and music history from Michigan State University, Master of Music in piano from the Indiana University and a Bachelor of Music in piano from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Among her distinguished teachers are Menahem Pressler, John Perry, and Ralph Votapek. Dr. Lam served as the President of the New Jersey Music Teachers Association from 1998-2000. During her 14 years in Cleveland, Dr. Lam won the esteem of her colleagues and students with her exceptional class of students, many of whom won state, national and International Young Artist competitions, and became featured soloists with the Suburban Symphony Orchestra, the Baldwin-Wallace Youth Orchestra, and the Akron Youth Symphony.
As a distinguished teacher in New Jersey, she has inspired her students to become winners at state, national and international Young Artist competitions, including the New York International Young Artists Competition, International Young Artists Piano Competition featuring Chinese Music, the Music Teachers National Association-Yamaha High School competition, the Music Teachers National Association Senior Piano Duet Competition, the NJMTA Young Musicians competition, prize winners at the Steinway Society Scholarship Competition, the Cecilian Music Club Young Artists Competition, and the MEA competition of New Jersey. Her students have performed at the Alice Tully Hall, the Weill Recital Hall and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufmann Center, Steinway Hall of New York City, and the Mayo Performing Arts Center, and have been featured soloists with the New Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey, the Rowan University Chamber Orchestra, Sussex Community Symphony Orchestra, the Battleground Symphony Orchestra and the Westminster Community Orchestra. Her students have been selected to perform at the national public radio from the Top which showcases the nation’s most exceptional pre-college classical musicians as well as the Crescent concert which features the New Jersey exceptional young artists age sixteen and under.
Dr. Lam has received such awards as the Presidents Plaque for Excellence in Music and Piano Performance, Outstanding Teaching in recognition of Four Student Winning Steinway Society Scholarship in l997, and the Distinguished Pedagogy Awards for Outstanding Teaching "Young Artists" from the Cecilian Music Club. She was awarded Teacher of the Year at the NJMTA conference 2019.Both of Dr. Lam’s children are professional musicians. Her son, Stephen Fang, has been Associate Principal Cellist of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra since 2007. Her daughter, Jeannette Fang, is the newest member of the acclaimed Garth Newel Piano Quartet, who performs over 50 concerts a year as artists in residence and artistic directors of the Garth Newel Music Center in Hot Spring, VA. Dr. Lam enjoys spending precious time with her adorable four year old granddaughter, Ellia Fang.
