CHARLIE BANTA
Charles Banta is a rising composer and pianist who makes it his artistic purpose to
explore the depth of emotion. With a background singing in the world-class American
Boychoir, touring the United States and the world, Charlie has experience connecting
with audiences in a direct way, which continues to influence his musicianship to this
day. With comprehensive experience in his composition, piano, and choral studies,
Charlie wants to repurpose his definition of artistic perfection and arrive at an
understanding of artistry that encourages a clearer and truer relationship between
concertgoers and performers. This definition will be the foundation not only for his
artistic pursuits, but hopefully in establishing an honest and open musical community as
well.
Charlie is a recent graduate from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, having
received his bachelor’s degree in composition with a concentration in piano. His most
recent success was completing his senior recital, which comprised works for solo piano,
woodwind trio, string trio, and choir. Through this effort, he reinvigorated his creative
spirit and desire to communicate through music, and to connect to musicians who share
his artistic vision. What’s next? Charlie is taking time between degrees to know what
music means to him outside an academic setting. He is practicing piano, composing for
friends, teaching music theory to bright young students, and aiming to become a piano
technician. Charlie is glad that he can be here today as one of Dr. Lam’s alumni to
share some music with you!
